Make that young composers, Chen Yi, Xiaogang Ye, David Schiff, Beethoven, and Stravinsky....in the mountains. Team 3A had a great, jam packed three days at Music in the Mountains this week. The Grass Valley folks couldn't have been nicer, and gave us an energetic reception to our Wednesday evening program of the above mentioned composers. Thursday was spent rehearsing and performing 20 compositions by some extremely talented students from the Young Composers Program. Special thanks to Mark Vance and Jerry Grant, who do a fantastic job of guiding these aspiring composers as they learn the ropes. Each student introduced their piece at the performance...my favorite line, from a description of a work titled "Symphony of the Alien": "Finding love is difficult when people think you're a serial killer"....how true!
Bravo to all, especially pianist Susan Smith, who went beyond her pitch count by several thousand notes.
