One of the advantages of jet lag is that you can get more done before 5 am than one might think possible. Thus, the family and I (and beautiful tall blonde lady Kate, a rare sight in these parts) got up early enough today to take a stroll on the famous Bund riverfront park. Rumor had it that great sights were to be seen there in the A.M., and we were not disappointed! We saw everything from kite fliers to tai chi masters to badminton pros to insanely flexible folk (see picture....but not for too long....it will make you sore). Next up was a visit to the famous Yu garden, a Ming dynasty masterpiece located in the fantastic Yu shopping district; similar to the Suzhou gardens, but twice as big.
An afternoon of practicing was followed by a very enjoyable hour of reading Beethoven, Schubert, and Dvorak duos with Susan for our Oregon delegation in the hotel bar. The pianos were fantastic instruments in lousy shape....a not uncommon occurrence, we've been discovering. Still, it was a lot of fun, and well received by our fellow Oregonians, who were all beat from a long day at the Expo. The day was finished off with dinner at the Southern Beauty, a restaurant with the most amazing view of downtown Shanghai. Now that's the right way to eat duck tongue....
I've been getting good updates from our Beijing team, and will be joining them tomorrow after a quick morning flight. Too bad we are flying out of the 'wrong' airport, or we might have had a chance to ride the "MagLev" train, top speed 450 KM/hr.
Rehearsals with the Chinese artists will begin tomorrow, and in the afternoon I'll get to see first hand what we're dealing with...
So long.....sob....Shanghai....we're going to miss you!
